Tenerife Travel Information

La Gomera is only a short ferry crossing from Tenerife but offers a much slower take on life, so it’s a perfect choice if you’re searching for a peaceful, ‘away-from-it–all’ holiday.  It is a place of stark contrasts, where ravines plunge down through green valleys to small villages, the ocean and the occasional small beach below. The beaches are few and mainly pebble and black sand. The two main beaches are at San Sebastian and Playa Santiago with several small beaches at Calle Gran Rey, Hermigua and La Caleta.

The scenery is spectacular with sheer cliffs and steep hills heading up to the National Park of Garajonay which is usually shrouded in mist. The park is in the centre of this densely forested island and is one of the largest areas of laurel forests in the world. Popular with walkers, the rugged terrain, crossed by sparkling mountain streams and diverse flora provides scenic walking routes all over the island. You can also enjoy boat excursions to see the dolphins and rocky outcrops along the coast from Playa Santiagao and Valle Gran Rey.

Relaxing
Walking is the main activity on the island, apart from swimming and sunbathing, but you can also hire mountain-bikes for some really exhilarating cycle rides!

Eating Out
The island has its own vineyards and many excellent restaurants where you can sample the locally-made wines. Fish served the Canarian way is usually grilled and served with potatoes – baked in their skins in sea-salt with spicy mojo sauce. Lush fruits are complemented by the local sweet syrup ‘miel de Palma’ made from the sap of the local palm trees.

Car Hire
Car hire is recommended for many of the holidays on the island.  Please ask your travel agent for more information.

Island Hopping
Island hopping offers the perfect opportunity to discover a range of diverse islands and holiday resorts.  All seven of the Canary Islands have airports and there are inter island flights and ferries available.

Flights
La Gomera has a local airport with a few flights to Tenerife North and Gran Canaria. A catamaran runs regularly between the island and Los Cristianos in southern Tenerife. If travelling from the UK, you will need to take a morning flight to Tenerife to allow enough time to connect with the afternoon catamaran.
Transfers from the airport to ferry port take about 20 minutes and the ferry crossing is about 40 minutes. Transfers are available but a hire car is definitely recommended.
